I picked up someone in Calgary going to Winnipeg. We ran into snow, black ice, nearly out of gas & white-knuckling through weather that semi-trailers had either parked or we’re going very slow on. My original ideas of easy naps at gas stations was now in doubt. We actually had to ask the mayor of Gull Lake Saskatchewan to use his co-op gas card at 2am to fill my tank for cash so we could make it to Swift Current and not freeze (this was early May!). Once in Swift Current I said we get motel rooms, and offered to pay for hers. If every Greyhound West of Sudbury is gone and Via Rail is only for rich people what are the choices for Canadians except to drive long, tiring distances? I wonder what the longest ride Poparide has ever had. If it was longer than mine, how did people manage sleep and motel costs?
